So recently I’ve noticed an abnormal amount of cars, trucks and vans advertising websites on the back and sides of the
vehicle. Normal for companies like U-HAUL and Best Buy’s Geek Squad, but I cringe every time I see some local business’s domain pasted to the back of a van’s window with white vinyl letters. Just today I saw one van with the domain www.sellfastthishouse.com, and a truck with the letters www.eastcoastpetsupplies.com glued on the back windows. I hope whoever is selling these people their little white stickers is charging them per letter; then they’re literally paying for how horrible their domain is.
I’ll admit meetjennings.com is not the shortest domain, but it is only two words (and correct English). Generally the rule for domains is the shorter, the better. It’s hard to find a short and meaningful domain name these days, but we’re not at the point where companies are fighting over sets of 4 words.
This post isn’t about domains though; it’s about the fact that writing them on your car is a waste. Do these people think that
drivers are going to get out a pen and paper and scribble down their mile long domain name while commuting? Do they think they’ll remember it after the trip to the bank? If you saw geeksquad.com on the side of a car, you would. This is only because most people already know what Geek Squad is, it’s already our their head. Expecting someone to enter www.makenowfastcash.com into their browser after they get home from work is equivalent of shouting out your business name while jogging around the neighborhood and expecting people to drive out to your buisness.
Maybe in the day when we have laptops in the passenger’s seat. Maybe when we can have Scotty beam us home to visit doggiegroomingplacehere.com.
I’ve been recently thinking that it’s more of a status symbol. It says “Hey, I’m part of the interweb, I’m in the loop!” Kind of like how those Bluetooth headsets try to convince everyone else that you’re important (why do they flash blue if the wearer can’t even see the light?). The stickers are comparable to buying a sports jacket with your domain on it. But at least then it might spark up conversation and you’d end up with a business card or a phone number. Theres nothing available to help you remember an epic domain.
Unless you own computers.com, leave the carvertisments to dealerships and rentals.
